Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 29, 2025
1. Introduction
Argusmetrics is free, open-source (AGPL-3.0), self-hosted, privacy-first web analytics software. This Privacy Policy covers two things: (a) this marketing website at argusmetrics.io, and (b) the privacy properties of the self-hosted Argusmetrics software that you, the operator, deploy on your own infrastructure.
Because Argusmetrics is self-hosted, the project authors do not run a hosted service, do not receive or process your visitors' data, and have no access to any data collected by your deployment. Each operator who deploys Argusmetrics is the data controller for their own deployment and is responsible for complying with applicable privacy laws for the data they collect and store.
đ Privacy-First Promise: Argusmetrics is designed to be fully GDPR compliant by default. We don't use cookies, we don't collect personal data, and we don't track individuals across websites.
2. What Information Is Collected
2.1 This Website (argusmetrics.io)
This marketing website is a static informational site. It does not require you to create an account and does not collect personal data from visitors beyond standard server logs that may be kept by our hosting provider for security and operational purposes. If you email us, we receive whatever information you choose to include in your message.
2.2 Analytics Data (Self-Hosted Software)
When an operator installs Argusmetrics on their own website, the software collects minimal, anonymized data about that website's visitors and stores it on the operator's own infrastructure:
- Page URL: Which pages are visited
- Referrer: Where visitors came from (e.g., Google, direct, social media)
- Screen width: To determine device type (mobile, tablet, desktop)
- Country: Derived from IP address (IP is not stored)
- Browser: Derived from User-Agent string
- Timestamp: When the visit occurred
âšī¸ Important: Argusmetrics does NOT store IP addresses, set cookies, assign device IDs, or collect any personally identifiable information (PII).
2.3 What We DON'T Collect
- No cookies
- No IP addresses
- No unique device identifiers
- No cross-site tracking
- No personal identifiable information (PII)
- No fingerprinting
3. How Information Is Used
3.1 This Website
- To operate and secure this informational website
- To respond to support questions you send us by email
3.2 Analytics Data (Self-Hosted Software)
Analytics data is used solely by the operator of each deployment, within their own infrastructure, to:
- Provide website traffic insights to the operator
- Display aggregated statistics in the operator's dashboard
- Calculate metrics like pageviews, bounce rate, and top pages
4. Data Storage & Security
With self-hosted Argusmetrics, all analytics data is stored on infrastructure controlled by the operator who deploys the software. The project authors do not host, store, or have access to that data. Each operator chooses where their data lives and is responsible for securing it. The software is designed with the following properties:
- Encryption in transit: Data should be transmitted over HTTPS (operators are responsible for configuring TLS on their deployment)
- Access control: Only the operator and accounts they create can access the dashboard
- Data retention: Retention is configurable by the operator
- Backups: Backup strategy is determined by the operator
5. GDPR Compliance
Argusmetrics is fully GDPR compliant by design:
5.1 No Cookie Consent Required
Because we don't use cookies or collect personal data, you don't need a cookie consent banner for Argusmetrics.
5.2 Legal Basis & Data Controller
For self-hosted deployments, the operator is the data controller and is responsible for determining and documenting the legal basis for any processing they perform. Because Argusmetrics does not use cookies and does not collect personal data, processing typically relies on:
- Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR): Aggregated, anonymized website statistics
5.3 Data Subject Rights
Because Argusmetrics collects only anonymized, aggregated data and no personally identifiable information, it generally does not hold data that can identify an individual visitor. Where applicable, each operator, as data controller for their deployment, is responsible for handling data subject requests (such as access, rectification, erasure, and portability) for the data they collect and store.
6. Third-Party Services
The Argusmetrics software bundles no third-party advertising, tracking, or data-broker services. A self-hosted deployment runs entirely on the operator's own infrastructure (for example, via the provided Docker setup) and does not phone home to the project authors.
Argusmetrics never shares data with advertising networks, data brokers, or any third parties for marketing purposes.
7. Data Sharing & Disclosure
The project authors do not receive, sell, rent, or share data from your deployment, because the software is self-hosted and the authors have no access to it. Any sharing or disclosure of data collected by a deployment is solely under the control of the operator who runs it, and that operator is responsible for any such decisions, including complying with lawful requests.
8. Children's Privacy
Argusmetrics is not intended for children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Significant changes will be reflected here and in the project repository. The "Last updated" date above indicates when this policy was most recently revised.
